From the Introduction: "For those of us who develop an interest in the recent human history of Grand Canyon, gravesites and cemeteries become inevitable destinations. Some buried at the Canyon are well-known, but many others are remembered more among family members or are almost entirely forgotten. For a surprising number, little can be found in park records and similar sources, even for some who once worked as Canyon rangers. The goal here is to say something about everyone buried in the Canyon, in so far as possible. Biographical sketches are widely available for well-known individuals like William Bass and the Kolb brothers, but someone like Landy Floyd Davis has only an obscure grave marked by an irregular stone in the cemetery at the South Rim. You will not even find his name on the stone unless you happen to look closely when conditions are right. His story may not be as dramatic and historically important as some others, but that may be in part because we know so little about his life. If we knew more, it would undoubtedly prove as complex as anyone's, full of highs and lows no longer remembered. He is a good stand-in for many of us."
