"This is the original publication of Mexico City blues. First printing, 1959." In later printings this was changed to "First Grove Press edition, 1959."

"Mexico City blues is published in three editions: An Evergreen book (E-184); a cloth bound edition; a specially bound and signed edition of 26 copies lettered A through Z and 4 copies, hors commerce, numbered 1 through 4." Later printings were distributed by Random House. The Evergreen number ("Evergreen original E-184") was later changed to E-552; as of Sept. 2013 the work remains in print as a paperback from Grove Atlantic.

The limited lettered edition contains an extra preliminary leaf with statement: "This is a specially bound and signed edition of 26 lettered copies of which this is copy ... [signed in dark blue ink] Jack Kerouac."

Hardcover trade copies bound in gray cloth; limited copies bound in quarter brown linen and tan paper-covered boards.

Hardcover copies issued in dust jacket with full-page author portrait on back cover; front cover design, by Roy Kuhlman, also used for earliest printings of the paperback. The dust jacket was initially printed in black and white only, then with the lettering in red and green.

Collation (first printing): [unsigned, 8¹⁶]; 128 leaves, pp. [10 unnumbered (first leaf blank)] 1-244 [245-246 (blank)]. The extra leaf in limited copies is inserted following leaf 4.
